WebDAV at Bridges

A method for secure sharing of files

WebDAV is a technology built in to Windows and Apple computers for secure file sharing. Bridges is introducing WebDAV as a replacement for less secure file sharing methods. All files and folders accessible by WebDAV are encrypted in all transmission between the server and your workstation. This means that the university's data is safe in transit across the network.

You must not place the university's sensitive and/or restricted data in insecure locations such as your home computer, physical storage such as thumb drives, diskettes or CDs. Do not email sensitive and/or restricted data. All university data should remain on secure servers. Your unit ISM can advise you in proper handling of the university's data.

Access to WebDAV

You can access the WebDAV file shares using links your system administrator will place on your desktop for you. Two shares are of interest: "share" and "prod." "share" contains files and folders that you can use for your normal inter-office work. These shares are not a substitute for file shares on secure servers that your office may provide for you. Make sure you have copies of your files on secure servers. Files in the "share" area will not be recovered if you misplace them. "prod" contains files and folders automatically produced by the myUFL systems. Files in the "prod" area should be copied to other files and folders on secure servers for use. Files in the "prod" area that are more than 90 days old will be automatically removed each day by automated processes. Files in the "prod" area will not be recovered if you misplace them. You can use WebDAV files and folders just as you would any other files and folders. WebDAV does not use the concept of a "drive letter" - you'll have access through the shortcut on your desktop. You can cut and paste files, and open, edit and save files from Microsoft Office applications as you would with any other file share. Files of other types (txt, jpg, etc.) will open in Internet Explorer. Copy and save these files to your secure server. Edit using your favorite tools and save them back to the WebDAV file share as needed.

Automated production of files

Automated processes will place files on the WebDAV "prod" share for core office user(s) to pick up. All transfer from the myUFL systems to the "prod" file share is encrypted. Files in the "prod" share will remain there for up to 90 days. All files over 90 days old will be removed each day by automated processes. No file retrieval of these files will be supported. Files placed in the "prod" share should be copied or moved by the recipients to folders they manage.
